Lionel Messi has hit the ground running since his arrival at Inter Miami. The world champion has ignited the South Florida side and his inspirational presence and goals have propelled the club into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Leagues Cup ahead of a clash against Charlotte FC at the DRV PNK Stadium on Friday night.

With seven goals in the competition, Messi leads the way in the top goalscorer ranking but is under pressure from Bongokuhle Hlongwane with the Minnesota FC striker also on seven strikes with his goal against Toluca of Mexico instrumental in firing the ‘Loons’ into a quarterfinal berth where they face Nashville.

Hlongwane debuted in the tournament with a brace in Minnesota’s 4-0 win over Puebla, the South African then scored two more goals in a 3-2 upset loss to the Chicago Fire, who ultimately claimed first place in the group.

During the 3-3 draw against the Columbus Crew, the 23-year-old excelled again with one more double to send the game to penalties, where they prevailed against the Ohio side. Once again Minnesota need a spot kick shootout to progress to the quarterfinals over Toluca.
